Oh, September! How dear and welcome you are!
The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
And Mother cuts
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.“
Isn’t that delightful? To me it fully captures the fresh start that September brings. In truth, as much as we love summer, we’re ready to put it away, return to our routines and create a September to remember!
With September, I’m starting my third 3-month Health Challenge and hope you’ll join Meridian writer, Jane Birch and me. Over the past 3 months I have focused on whole-food-plant-based eating. It has helped me lose another 3-4 pounds, another few inches and find continuing deep-in my-heart joy in living the Word of Wisdom more fully. Even better, the good news of this marvelous way to eat and live is spreading!
There are all kinds of amazing reports at our Word of Wisdom Facebook group page and e-mails to me. For example, a friend from another ward just bubbled and glowed as she told me that the Word of Wisdom health challenge issued here at Meridian had come at “just the right time! Although she’d given up sugar a while ago and was on the road to better health, she just needed “something” more. She had been praying to find it. Jane’s book (“Discovering The Word of Wisdom”) and the challenge extended through Meridian provided her answers!
Of course, I was tickled and as we shared how exciting it all is, she added thoughtfully, “The most surprising thing is that, though there are indeed physical health blessings from following the Word of Wisdom “do’s” more closely, even greater are the spiritual blessings! I go to bed every night with such peace, knowing I ate and cared for myself in a way that was Heavenly Father’s plan for my body. If I didn’t follow it as fully as I could, I knew what I’d do differently the next day. It’s hard to put into words the feelings that go with it all! It’s such a relief that I don’t have to worry anymore about how or what I’m supposed to eat. My days of reading, studying and trying to figure it all our are over!” (These “do’s” are elaborated in Jane Birch’s articles here at Meridian.)
Our conversation and her enthusiasm (not to mention how fabulous she looked her skin glowed, her hair was thick and shiny, and her weight at a great place) gave me a lot to think about. A quote from President Hinckley in Jane’s book immediately came to mind: “I thank the Lord for a testimony of the Word of Wisdom. I wish we lived it more fully. But even though we do not, the Lord pours out His blessings upon those who try.” (November 1993 Ensign)
That was what my friend and I were trying to put into words: we are experiencing the Lord’s blessings that come to “those who try.” One of them is a unique measure of joy and peace on a daily basis that is independent of how much better we feel, actually are (and look!) physically. Resolving this important dilemma of how/what to eat and be healthy leaves room in our lives to embrace other happy things! There’s a lighter, brighter spirit about life itself when your body and mind are strengthened with whole-food plant-based eating, based upon the inspired doctrine that this is our Heavenly Father’s plan for our bodies.
Whether you’re ready for the whole challenge or not, perhaps with September knocking on our doors you could choose just one or two “do’s”, i.e, to eat more fruits and vegetables, embrace more greens, to limit meat to just once a week, or to just get started with sugar and/or dairy by choosing two or three items to limit or eliminate. The scriptures tell us that “Out of small things proceedeth that which is great,” and as one of my dear friends is quick to repeat: “When my husband decided to give up peanut butter, he had no idea that this one small decision would launch successfully losing 100 pounds.”
Here are two other simple ways to make this September memorable and to create happiness for you and those around you: How about a poem for every day to fill our thoughts? Or something interesting or silly to celebrate every day to fill the need for a day to be special?
