Exhibition open 21 March through 1 September 2003

Exhibit Theme: The Museum sponsors competitions where Latter-day Saint artists bring their art and faith together in new creative works. This is a call for new artwork for the Sixth International Competition, to be held in 2003. The subject matter for this exhibit covers the range of Latter-day Saint experience. Entries should represent themes, stories, people, places, and ideas related to one or more of the following: (1) Latter-day Saint doctrines, beliefs, and teachings, including messages and stories from the scriptures and teachings of the prophets; (2) important events, places, and people in the history of the Church; (3) the application of gospel teachings and values in Latter-day Saint life, including Church, family, and individual activities and programs. We request outstanding work by both professional and amateur artists.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints age 18 and over. Each artist may submit one work of art. The Museum welcomes a variety of cultural and aesthetic traditions, styles, approaches, and artistic media. Media may include painting, sculpture, quilts, textiles, pottery, ceramics, jewelry, wood carving, metal work, photography, drawing, original prints, etc. Entries must have been completed since 1 January 2000. The artwork maximum size limit is 84 inches, including frame, in the longest dimension.

Entry Form: Entry forms will be mailed during May 2002 to all artists on the Museum’s mailing list. Please notify the Museum in writing of address changes or to add the names of other artists. The entry form will call for a title, year of creation, medium, short comment on the work for use on a caption, and statement of value in U.S. dollars for sale and/or insurance purposes.

First-round Jury: A multi-member jury comprised of museum staff and knowledgeable art specialists will evaluate photographic images of the artwork to determine which entries will be brought into the Museum.. The preferred formats are 35mm slides, photographic or digital prints (up to 8 in. x 10 in.), or digital images available on e-mail files. Artists must submit one image picturing the overall artwork. Up to two additional images of artwork details may be included. Label each picture with the artist’s name, title of work, and arrow or word “top.” Slides and prints will not be returned. Photos and entry forms must be postmarked by 15 November 2002.

Second-round Jury: Artists whose works are selected for the second round of judging will be notified after 15 December 2002. Original artwork must arrive at the Museum no later than 7 February 2003. The received entries will be juried again to develop the final selection for the Museum exhibit. Artwork will be judged (1) on the creative and successful expression of the theme and (2) on the excellence of aesthetic and technical accomplishment.

Purchase Awards and Cash Awards: The jury will award up to twenty Purchase Awards, where pieces will purchased for the Museum collection. Up to twenty Awards of Merit of $500 each, recognizing pieces judged most noteworthy within different categories of artistic medium, will be awarded.
