2002 Pearl Awards a Smashing Success
Largest and Farthest Reaching Program to Date

Enoch Train

The stage at Cottonwood High School auditorium was transformed on Friday night as the 2002 Pearl Awards was presented in a gala ceremony. The event was taped in front of a live audience and will be broadcast on KJZZ-TV in Salt Lake City on June 30.

The Pearl Awards was also broadcast live over KZION Internet Radio, reaching all 50 states and 24 countries around the world. KZION reported listeners tuning into the program from as far away as Croatia.

Featuring top-notch performances from favorites like Jericho Road, Enoch Train, Julie de Azevedo and Cherie Call, the show boasted outstanding production values and the most diverse group of nominees to date.

Hollywood film scorer Kevin Kiner, who won two Pearls for his work on the soundtrack to The Other Side of Heaven, said, “I’ve been to all three of the top awards programs–the Grammys, the Emmys and the Oscars–and the Pearl Awards have been no less impressive.”

Hosting for the second year, KJZZ Movie Guy Scott Christopher kept things lively with his relaxed banter and great audience rapport. His on-stage interaction with presenter Julie Stoffer (of MTV’s The Real World) proved to be one of the evening’s highlights.

Other highlights included Cherie Call’s four acceptance speeches at the winner’s podium. In the Songwriter of the Year category, she was nominated along with Tyler Castleton and Julie de Azevedo, both of whom Call has named as having had great influence on her own songwriting. Call also took home the Pearl Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year.
