Christmas-time at Temple Square with all its festive lighting and Christ-oriented displays will again this year be a distinctive season. It is a time for families, happiness, and contemplation and a time for music!
Beginning Saturday, November 30 (lights on Temple Square will be turned on November 29), and running through Monday, December 23, choral and musical groups will present songs and music of the season.
With the exception of Monday evenings, most weekday evenings and Sundays provide 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. forty-minute choral, string, or orchestral concerts in the Assembly Hall. In addition, most evenings provide similar concerts at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. in the South Visitors Centers on Temple Square. Further, many week-days provide similar concerts at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
Choral and musical groups performing include high school and collegiate student choruses, ensembles, and madrigals from Utah and Idaho; children’s choruses; church and civic choruses, choirs, and musical groups.
Children, in the care of their parents, are welcome at the above short, unrecorded Christmas-season concerts. A detailed schedule of groups performing, including site location and times of performance, is freely distributed at Temple Square.
In addition to the above series of concerts, there are also the following major concerts:
Saturday, November 30—Box Elder, Logan, and Murray High School Combined Choirs in the Tabernacle at 7 :30 p.m.
Friday, December 6—The Salt Lake Symphony, under the direction of James Caswell, will perform festive classical music for the holiday season in the Assembly Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, December 31—As December and 2002 draw to a close, tonight will be presented Temple Square’s annual First Night Gala. A joyous evening of concert-level music will be given from 5:30 p.m. to midnight in the Tabernacle and in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. A detailed schedule of performers, including site locations and times of performance, will be distributed at Temple Square.
