This past week we marked a very special birthday for Meridian—we turned 12 on the 12th. Those of you who have been with us a long time know that we went online February 12, 1999 at 5:35 PM. So very much has happened in the past twelve years. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. One of the most dominant memories I have of launching Meridian is that I didn’t yet have an email address and I needed to figure out how to use the Internet in general. Thank goodness for learning curves!

As you all must know, it takes tremendous resources to do a daily magazine, and this year’s donation drive has fallen substantially short. We certainly understand that the bad economy has taken its toll on more than us at Meridian. Our goal was to have 2,500 participants (at any level). We have received donations from 1,303 readers—readers just like you. Thank you so much. We are so very grateful. We really do need those other 1,197 readers to step forward and donate. Our projections and goals are based on our needs and our budget for the year. Please, if you have not contributed to our drive this year, would you do so now?

We will only continue this drive from today until this Saturday, February 26.

Your notes of encouragement have lifted us. Many times they have been the fuel for the fire of that day.

“I like everything about Meridian. Thank you,” said Virginia of Clovis, California.

“Thanks for all your great work. Wish I had more time to read every article,” wrote Marilyn of Chandler, Arizona.

“You are doing a great service for the LDS (and others). It’s a daily treat for me to receive Meridian!” said Bob of Falls Church, Virginia.

“Thanks for a great magazine. I appreciate all your efforts.” Signed: An appreciative reader from Spokane, Washington.

A reader from Sandy, Utah said: “Thanks for the lift each day!”

Diane, from Salinas, California said: “Many thanks–I LOVE your magazine!”

Ursula from Oakland, California wrote: “Enclosed is my check. Sorry I can’t give you more. My income is rather limited. I have not gone to the movies for years. You are doing a great job. Hope that you can keep on doing it. Thanks.” She sent $100. Thank you so much!

“To the Proctors and Meridian Magazine: Enclosed is a small donation to express my thanks for your efforts to keep us informed. Sincerely, Chris from Dublin, California.”

Do you realize we give our readers more than 10,000 links to the best news sources in the world each year? Now THAT is keeping you informed!

“Dear Meridian Magazine People–I really enjoy reading your articles on the computer. I’m sending $20 to help keep them coming.” Sincerely, Louise from Newdale, Idaho.

Craig from Lehi, Utah wrote: “Thank you for this magazine on the Internet. You have had such good articles that are thought provoking. What a blessing.”

Do you realize Meridian is read in all 50 states and in more than 220 countries and territories throughout the world? We have a reader (yes A reader) in the Vatican. We have a reader at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica—just think, while we in the Northern Hemisphere are getting blasted by these immense winter storms, our reader in Antarctica is enjoying the balmy summer weather of the extreme south. Go figure.

“Many thanks to you all–I just love Meridian–you all do outstanding work, and there is a great, powerful spirit there, with every issue.” Diana from Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Here was a great suggestion from the sunbelt of Utah: “Why not do this [fund-raising drive] in middle of year when we have more money?” A reader from St George.

Maybe we should try such a notion.

“Thank you so much for your wonderful website. Keep up the good work.” From LaNon in El Paso, Texas.

We receive enough “Keep up the good works” from our readers to keep us going a month of Sundays.

One couple wrote: “Thanks for all the interesting articles and news updates. We live in Arizona 4 or 5 months of the year and are very interested in the LDS perspective of your USA News when we return to Canada. Keep up this great work!! Al and Carol from Edmonton and Queen Creek.

Do you know that we have readers from every Province in Canada and our highest readership is in Ontario! Come on Alberta, please jump on the bandwagon and spread the word in your Province!

A loyal reader from Ypsilanti, Michigan wrote: “Worth much more than $35, but I don’t have more to give! Be well–Moroni 7:47; Mosiah 2:41; 2 Ne 13:10; Isaiah 3:10; Duet. 5: 29, 33. Thanks for the inspiration!

“Dear Meridian, Hope this will help in some small way. I am retired and on a fixed income. Meridian is well worth any sacrifice I might make to help you to keep going. Sincerely, Joyce from Wheatland, Wyoming.

Another similar reader wrote: Dear Folks–I love and appreciate your Meridian Magazine. Wish I could give more but am an 81-year-old widow on a fixed income. Here’s $100,” signed LaVaughn from Rocklin, California.

We are humbled by all of our more mature readers. They always encourage and lift us.

Can you please be one of the 1,197 readers to donate so we can achieve our goal and keep bringing Meridian home to you each day? We really do need your support—each one of you.

“Thank you for my daily inspiration. I love the magazine and read it daily even re-reading some. Hope this $20 helps. Wish I could send more.

” Redell from Pueblo, Colorado.

So many readers said something similar to Joy from Thatcher, Arizona: “Thank you so much for a wonderful magazine. I have enjoyed article after article which have truly blessed my life. Thank you for the many sacrifices that you have made to make this available. I only wish I could contribute more.”

Another reader from Logan, Utah wrote: “Thank you for your continued efforts in bringing to the public awareness your timely articles, advice, and doctrinal help.”

“Thank you for a fine magazine. We were introduced to it while on our mission two years ago. It was nice to get the news from the U.S. but more importantly to get church related articles. Your series of marriage articles was particularly meaningful. Thank you. Sandra from Teasdale, Utah.”

“You do an outstanding job in putting the truth front and center.” LeRoy from Hanford, California.

Dale and Lueda from Omaho said: “Many thank you’s for all you do. Meridian Magazine has made a difference in our lives!”

And Gil and Lynda from Sandy, Utah simply wrote: “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! For your excellent work!!! Here’s $100.”

Oh, how we appreciate (and need) such generosity.

“Thanks so much for countless hours of inspirational reading and gorgeous photography!” From Atwater, California.

We loved this salutation:

“To our dear friends at Meridian, Please know how grateful we are to receive your magazine.

You uplift, edify, and inform us, while helping us to feel part of your family.

We all are one family, aren’t we? May the new year bring more joy and prosperity. Your friends and avid readers, Ray, Melanie, Ty, Cole, Adam, and Trent from Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.

Thank you from our family to yours!

We find that the senior missionaries throughout the world read Meridian:

“I enjoy the daily messages. It helped so much for the 3-year mission in the Dominican Republic. Keep up the good work!” From Plano, Texas.

And from Waskom, Texas: “Reading the articles on your magazine is a ‘bright spot’ in the life of this 86-year-old woman. Thanks for your efforts! Marjorie.”

One last comment from a reader in Ogden, Utah:

“As Bishop of an inner city ward for 6 years (until 5/31/10) and with my wife the RS president, our individual service was/is no less than 30 hours weekly. That does not leave much time for much else besides family scripture study and work…and Meridian 🙂 I have appreciated the daily ‘knocks on the door’ from Meridian in my email Inbox.”

Well, that says it all—we are working together with nearly 100 writers to keep Meridian coming to your home daily. We really need 1,197 more readers to donate to this year’s drive. We end this week and hope we can achieve our goal.
