Arizonans:
More Signatures Needed for Marriage
By Maurine Jensen Proctor
Though 20 states now have constitutional amendments protecting marriage, twice in the past few months — in California and Florida — drives to get enough signatures on petitions to put a marriage amendment on the ballot have failed. We can’t let that happen in Arizona.
Protect Marriage Arizona, which is a coalition of individuals and organizations spanning a broad religious and cultural sector in the state, has been gathering 300,000 signatures to ensure the measure can be on the ballot for a July 1st deadline. If you live in Arizona, your help is needed now.
Here are some specific steps you can take:
● As the deadline looms, we are short thousands of signatures — and we need many people to step forward and volunteer to pass petitions to their friends and neighbors. It is easy to have a clipboard in your car with the petitions and ask everyone you know to sign as you go about your daily life. You can receive petitions by emailing info@protectmarriageaz.com or calling 602-978-0737 or toll-free at 1-866-48MARRIAGE.● Even better, contact Family Leader Arizona director, Walt Schild at familyleaderaz@cableaz.com and volunteer a couple of hours to gather petitions at a table where the public gathers such as a Wal-Mart or grocery store. We are working with our friends at United Familes Arizona and Protect Marriage Arizona to be at locations where we have access to many people who can sign the petitions.
Don’t assume that somebody else will do this, because without volunteers we just can’t get sufficient names on the petitions and therefore get a marriage amendment on the ballot.
We watched the days tick off before the deadlines in California and Florida — and the immense effort to gather signatures to protect marriage come to naught. It takes people like you to step forward.
● Pass this note on to all of your friends and ask them to help.
● All the petitions that are out and circulating need to be turned in as soon as possible. If you have been passing petitions, you can drop them off at the following locations:
