Having recently been repatriated to their home state after a year in Nashville, Darla and her husband live north of Houston, TX with their two school aged daughters.
Darla has a degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies from The University of Texas at Arlington, but started out at the Savannah College of Art and Design, pursuing a degree in Graphic Design. During the ’90s, she worked as an aerobics instructor, personal trainer, Physical Director for the YMCA, adjunct college professor (teaching various fitness classes and the basic concepts of fitness), and an exercise physiologist for a group of cardiologists.
After leaving her chosen field in 1999 to tackle motherhood, Darla reengaged her artistic spirit and began to paint on walls for the first time ever. She painted murals for friends and taught herself how to faux from 2000-2005, when she decided to go professional, opening Mural Mama in 2005.
Despite a very good three years in business, Mural Mama closed its doors in the summer of 2008 as the Gaylors headed to Nashville. During their year there, Darla was more interested in “just being a mom” again than painting. At least for a while.
Now that things are settling down after moving, Darla is preparing to reopen her mural business, which is being reincarnated as 2nd Story Designs, Additionally, she has started back to school to work on a second B.A. through UT Austin- this time in English. She hopes to complete a master’s degree by the time the kids are in college and desires to go back to teaching at the collegiate level.
She enjoys volunteering in the community and at the kids’ school, gardening, painting, kayaking, hiking, pontificating, engaging in politics, writing, and reading…a lot!
