As the mother of a newborn and a 3 yr old, this is a wonderful reminder. I spend my days nursing, changing diapers, putting baby down for naps and then trying to find meaningful ways to connect with my 3 yr old. At times I feel downtrodden and like my life is so boring compared to peers. It’s a good reminder that small and simple things make a huge difference. Thank you for that reminder!

A few years ago I shared a conversation with Becky Douglas about this very thing. She may not remember but oh how it impacted me. I asked her how it feels to do such important and influential things for others. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in a big way and Becky has also been an inspiration of mine. She looked at me steadily and said confidently, “Sometimes the little things are just as big. What matters is that it is meaningful. Caring for your elderly mother, or a baby, or whatever it is may seem small but when done with great love, it is the greatest thing you can do. God needs us to do meaningful things.” Thank you, Hermana for teaching me this lesson over and over again.

Excellent article! I'm sure many readers can relate to this story. We never know how much a small act of kindness impacts another person. Mother Teresa said the famous quote: "We can do no great things - but we can do small acts with great love." You never know how a simple gesture can ease an aching heart that might be unseen to others. Recall the BOM scripture that through small and simple things, great things are brought to pass.

I love this sentence: "Oh, if we all could just happen to sit next to someone who could show us how a kind word or a thoughtful gesture we had made almost without thinking had made a significant difference in someone else’s life!" I'm a nurse of many years. Every once in a while I run into a patient from years gone by. The face may look familiar, but I rarely remember the exact circumstances of meeting them. But they remember something I did or said that makes a difference. But you don't have to be in a traditional "helper" job to make a difference. I can still describe in detail a young man who said "you have a beautiful smile that lights up your face" as he gave me my change and receipt at a McDonald's drive-thru window! I was very depressed that day and he turned it around in an instant. NEVER underestimate your simple offerings to others! NEVER miss those little opportunities to lift another.
