Most NT scholars believe that Jesus was anointed with oil on two different occasions. The scriptures provides us no additional information about the woman who anointed Jesus in the house of Simon.

I could feel the emotion well up in eyes from the very first word. Historical accuracy or not, the woman took everything she had that was of value and poured it onto an unknown Rabbi's feet. Think of the young rich man who would not sell everything he had and follow Christ because he 'had much'. This woman was so much worse off. She was hopeless and desperate.Her life was devoid of meaning, purpose, The world would be a better place if she had never existed. I myself have been there. It is pure terror and despair. Nonetheless, with perfect faith, she took all her worldly possessions, the one thing in her world that had 'value,' even if it was only valued as such by man. She pushed her way into a place she knew she would not be welcome, impelled inexorably by the Holy Ghost, no doubt. Christ blesses her, forgave her sins, as only God can do, and then did not simply shoo her away for her to return to her previous life. No, he picked her up, He treated her as the daughter of God that He knew she was. The Lord introduced her into a new world ,one where she would have support and love, and, most importantly, a way to leave her past behind. How many time have we asked or told people, "If you need anything, let us know?" Christ knew what she needed and he didn't just give her instructions, but walked with her, and placed her the arms of a loving couple who would also soon learn her true worth.

This is a lovely back story, but as I read John 11:2, last night regarding Mary, Martha and Lazarus, it states "(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)" In my mind, the backstory doesn't fit these circumstances.

I really loved this article. Thank you for writing it. You did a great job! I keep running into this story from the scriptures and each time feel something more profound learned from it. You story helped me along with the things I am learning. I think I cried through most of it. I wrote about it in my blog and shared your link. I hope that is ok.

And even though this story is fiction, it includes an absolutely vital element. It is not enough to say "thy sins are forgiven, go in peace". We absolutely MUSTprovide a nurturing environment for those who are leaving an old life for a new one. They need support (spiritual certainly, and possibly temporal as well), new friends, and welcoming circumstances if the change of heart is to have room enough to grow into a changed life.
