What Archeology Has Taught Us About Lehi’s Jerusalem
To read more from Daniel, visit his blog: Sic Et Non.
Joseph Smith was famously shocked, while he was translating the Book of Mormon, by its mention of walls surrounding the city of Jerusalem in the time of Lehi. He needed to be assured by his wife Emma that, in fact, it did have such walls. He knew very little about the city in those days. Today, though, we’re learning much more.
“Between the eighth and sixth centuries BCE,” write Yuval Gadot and Yiftah Shalev in the current issue of “Biblical Archaeology Review,”
“Jerusalem reached unprecedented heights of power and prosperity. The city was the economic, political, and religious capital of the Kingdom of Judah. It boasted the Temple, the royal palace, and other official buildings of the state. From a small town founded on the narrow ridge known today as the City of David, Jerusalem developed into a …

Four Contacts to Make After the Mission
Cover image via Gospel Media Library.
Those of you who are familiar with missionary work know that the first thing a missionary needs before he can teach the gospel is someone to teach. While most missionaries relish the opportunity to teach, many struggle with the responsibility of finding someone to teach. Finding someone to teach isn’t always easy.
Finding can occur in many different ways, more ways now than ever in history. In the past, missionaries relied heavily on knocking doors to find, although the preferred way of finding has always been through member referrals. The Covid pandemic necessitated finding on social media, a method of finding that has proven extremely successful.
Although there are many different ways to find, they all have one thing in common: they begin with an initial contact. That contact may be someone responding to a Facebook post. The contact may be somebody met on …

How the Coming Forth of the Book of Mormon Is Similar to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
View the post on Scripture Central.
“For those who shall be destroyed shall speak unto them out of the ground, and their speech shall be low out of the dust, and their voice shall be as one that hath a familiar spirit; for the Lord God will give unto him power, that he may whisper concerning them, even as it were out of the ground; and their speech shall whisper out of the dust.” 2 Nephi 26:16The Know
The Book of Mormon was first published on March 26, 1830—194 years ago this week. Book of Mormon prophets, from Nephi to Moroni, looked forward to that day, when their record would “speak unto [modern readers] out of the ground, and their speech shall be low out of the dust, and their voice shall be as one that hath a familiar spirit; … and their speech shall whisper out of

Inside Out Joy
Surrounded by thousands of thrilled Filipinos last month, I sat in a seat in the front rows of the Arena at the Mall of Asia in Manilla applauding a first-ever, on-location concert by the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. The Choir had never before performed in the Philippines, and only once anywhere in Asia, forty years earlier in Japan. The palpable excitement at this historic performance was soul-stirring. The grateful audience leaned over the balconies with their arms extended to get closer to the performers. With tears in their eyes, they sang along when the Choir performed the songs they had carefully rehearsed in the local language, Tagalog. The locals clapped so loudly the applause made my ears ring. It was all glorious.
That grandness was never to be forgotten. Also never to be forgotten for me was a personal, provocative experience I had that was similarly grand …

Mental Health Minute: Sunday Will Come
Cover image via Gospel Media Library.
In a span of four weeks, my wife and I attended three funerals. One was for the 43-year old daughter of good friends. She had been in the hospital since December. Another was the 41-year-old son-in-law of my wife’s cousin. His death was sudden and unexpected. The other was the former husband of a sister we had home taught for several years. There was sadness for the death of each one. We mourn for our family and friends who have passed away. We miss them and think of them often. During each funeral, each memorial service, and during each day, week, month, and year ahead of us, we can feel great comfort because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In the October 2006 General Conference, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin (1917-2008) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared the following:

The Spray Bottle
My wife, Donna, is a band instrument repair person. She has been repairing instruments for twenty-one years. She has become proficient at it. As a member of NAPBIRT (National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians), she has shared and had shared with her some interesting stories and images, such as a trumpet that a person ran over and flattened totally, then brought it in, thinking it could be repaired. As one technician said, “It went from a C trumpet to an A flat trumpet.” One day, a young band instrument technician shared his story.
Lance had gone through some of the best training a person could have for band instrument repair. There are two ways to get this training: a trade school or an apprenticeship. Lance had done both. He then went on to work for a music store for a few years before setting up his own shop.…

Come Listen to a Prophet’s Voice
Why do we prepare? Because the prophets have warned us of things to come. Why have they warned us?
“All scripture given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction for righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16
In other words we are warned for instruction so we are ready. President Heber J. Grant declared, “Nothing destroys the individuality of a man, a woman, or a child as much as the failure to be self-reliant.”
Ready for what?
Matthew 24:6–7 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Luke 21: 8-17 & 20,25,26
“And he said, Take heed that ye be not …
